The much-anticipated opening date for Uttarakhand’s Valley of Flowers trek has been announced. Starting June 1, 2024, nature enthusiasts can embark on a journey through one of India’s most picturesque treks to the Valley of Flowers National Park, located within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
The trek, spanning three days and covering 17 kilometers, begins at either Govindghat or Pulna village. With the monsoon season extending accessibility until October and November, visitors can witness the valley’s pristine beauty, showcasing over 300 species of flowers native to the Himalayas. Early sightings of potentilla, wild rose, and primrose mark the arrival of spring as the snow melts.
Trekkers will encounter a vibrant array of flowers, including anemones, geraniums, blue poppies, and bluebells. Beyond the floral spectacle set against the majestic peaks, the valley also hosts rare wildlife such as the grey langur, flying squirrel, Himalayan weasel, black bear, red fox, lime butterfly, snow leopard, and Himalayan monal.
For those planning their trip, the nearest railway station is in Rishikesh, approximately 262 kilometers away, and the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is about 270 kilometers away. From there, travelers can take a cab or drive to Govindghat, located at an elevation of around 6,000 feet above sea level.
The Valley of Flowers National Park covers an area of 87 square kilometers in the Chamoli district and is one of the two core zones of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, alongside the Nanda Devi National Park. Discovered by three British mountaineers in 1931, the valley is renowned for its stunning array of over 600 flower varieties, including anemones, orchids, poppies, primulas, marigolds, and daisies.
Visitors to the valley will also be treated to sights of gushing waterfalls and untamed streams. The diverse fauna, including the Himalayan monal, black bear, red fox, lime butterfly, and snow leopard, adds to the allure of this natural wonder. The Valley of Flowers, set to open on June 1, promises an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
