CBP Issues Warning About Prohibited Flowers at Border Ahead of Mother’s Day

by Jennifer

McALLEN, Texas – As Mother’s Day approaches, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have issued a cautionary reminder to the public regarding the transportation of flowers across U.S. ports of entry. While the gesture of gifting flowers is customary for the occasion, CBP emphasizes that not all floral varieties are permitted into the country.

Among the stringent regulations on agricultural imports, Chrysanthemums stand out as prohibited items, particularly when originating from Mexico. CBP officials underscore that these flowers pose a risk due to their potential to harbor fungal pathogens, which could endanger American flora and agriculture.

Furthermore, CBP maintains strict prohibitions on potted plants and soil imports, aimed at safeguarding U.S. crops from the threats of plant diseases, invasive insects, and parasites. While roses, carnations, and numerous other floral varieties are permissible following rigorous inspections, the importation of live plants or growing specimens necessitates a permit, with soil imports from Mexico strictly forbidden.

It is imperative for all travelers to declare any flowers or plants in their possession to CBP officials upon entry at U.S. ports. To facilitate compliance, the agency’s website offers a comprehensive list distinguishing permitted and prohibited items, including cut flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

CBP warns that failure to declare agricultural products can result in penalties of up to $1,000 for first-time offenders transporting non-commercial quantities.

Notably, while Mother’s Day falls on Friday, May 10, in most of Latin America, it is celebrated on Sunday in the United States. As families prepare to honor mothers across borders, CBP’s advisory underscores the importance of adhering to regulatory protocols to ensure the protection of American agriculture and ecosystems.
